History
Consulting Geologist: May 1982 to present
Worldwide contract mineral exploration and property evaluation with a
special interest in Central America and the Caribbean Basin.
Activities have included regional exploration, property evaluation and
assessment, detailed geologic mapping and target definition, drill testing and
reserve development, and the preparation of qualifying reports.
Special interests include:
Central
America and the Caribbean Basin. See
Nelson (1990, 1992, 1992, 1995, 1996, 2000).
Epithermal
precious metal deposits, especially hot spring deposits.
See Nelson (1988, 1991, 1992, 2000).
Use of multi-element geochemistry to distinguish Carlin-type ore deposits from barren
Carlin-type systems. See Nelson
(1990, 1991).
Consulting positions held include senior consulting
geologist with Cimarron Exploration (May 1982 through April 1984); and,
president of Recursos del Caribe, S.A., a consulting firm incorporated in Costa
Rica and Panama, since September 1988. A
model describing the relationship between volcanic dome emplacement and base and
precious metal mineralization at the Pueblo Viejo deposit, Dominican Republic
was published in Mineralium Deposita (Nelson, 2000).
Research geologist: Homestake Mining Co., May 1980
to April 1982
Research geology
and geochemistry. Activities
included detailed geologic mapping, alteration studies, geochemical modeling and
geophysical characterization of the McLaughlin gold deposit, California and
evaluation of epithermal precious metal resources in the western United States,
Canada, Mexico, Japan and New Zealand. A
model relating hot spring gold deposits to hydrothermal eruption events was
published in Economic Geology (Nelson and Giles, 1985).
Staff Geologist: Anaconda Copper Company, June
1976 to May 1980
Hard rock uranium exploration in the western United States and Canada
including major projects in the Marysvale volcanic field (Utah) and the Copper
Mountain district (Wyoming). Activities
included project generation; prospect evaluation and acquisition; detailed
geologic mapping; target definition, drill evaluation, and reserve development.
Responsibilities included supervision of a team of three geologists with
an annual budget of $500,000. A
model published in Economic Geology for Schwarzwalder-type uranium
mineralization focuses on a Proterozoic origin for these high-grade deposits
(Nelson and Gallagher, 1982).
Assistant geologist: Phelps Dodge Corporation,
summer of 1975
Molybdenum exploration and drill logging in the Colorado Mineral Belt.
Amherst
College: Bachelor
of Arts degree in Geology awarded magna cum laude in June, 1973.
Grade point average of 3.4 (4.0 scale). Elected to the Sigma
Xi Research Society. Thesis:
Stratigraphy, structure and metamorphism of Paleozoic rocks, Sterling area,
Central Massachusetts.
Dartmouth
College: Masters
degree in geology awarded in June 1975. Grade
point average of 3.6 (4.0 scale). Dartmouth
College and J.W. Simpson fellowships. Thesis:
Structure and petrology of the Thorndike Pond area, southwestern New Hampshire.
Univ.
of California, Los Angeles (UCLA): Graduate work in solid inclusion piezothermometry through June 1976.
Grade point average of 3.6 (4.0 scale).
Shell fellowship and National Science Foundation research assistantship.
University
of Costa Rica:
Fulbright Foundation Faculty research grant from September, 1987 through
December, 1988. Research topic:
Gold mineralization of the Caribbean Basin – Source and Potential.
